REAL WEDDING: KATIE AND GRAYDON

When a couple tells you that a live band is their wedding must have, you know it’s going to be a good time. Known to their friends as a dynamic duo - fun, adventurous, competitive, and lovers of a good old fashioned cocktail, local Toronto couple Katie and Graydon never said no to a good party. When it came to planning their wedding, they wanted to ensure that they and their 150 guests would enjoy it to the fullest, so they brought us at Mad Bash Group on with our Full Wedding Planning package. Woo!

Through the wedding design process, we learned that Katie and Graydon had decorated their apartment in a mid-century modern style. We suggested leaning into this aesthetic, and incorporated it into their wedding design proposal. Grounded with a classic black and white checkered dance floor, we created a playful and funky colour palette of apricot, tangerine, mustard, aubergine, and moss green, which felt very them, and was so much fun to work with.

A MINIMALIST CEREMONY WITH BOLD POPS OF COLOUR

To anchor the ceremony space, we created a simple, circular white altar. Four ribbed white plinths framed the altar, topped with lush floral arrangements featuring playful blooms like anthuriums and hanging amaranthus — sculptural and full of personality. A timeless ivory aisle runner created a linear focal point leading to the altar, with clear acrylic chairs providing a clean, contemporary finish.

BOLD BOUQUETS FOR modern brides

The bridesmaids’ bouquets mirrored the same modern aesthetic, with colour-blocked arrangements drawn from the wedding’s vibrant palette. They really stood out against the bridesmaids’ sleek black dresses!

a mid-century modern wedding Reception

For the reception, tables were draped in light ivory organic linen with warm undertones that softened the space. Paired with beautiful natural wood cane chairs, the look felt warm, inviting, and very mid-century.

Place setting were curated to bring a specific aesthetic to the tablescape. Natural ivory stone charger plates grounded the setting, while green velvet napkins added a bold, tactile pop of colour. Modern gold flatware lent a funky yet still classic feel, and smokey glassware added a playfully retro vibe.

Centrepieces brought a sense of funkiness to the table, incorporating florals such as anthuriums and dahlias, for a clean, modern look.

We also upgraded the bar at The Symes (one of our favourite Toronto wedding venues), and added black ribbed bars and bar backs, to complement the checkered dance floor and keep things looking modern.

A SPARKLING DISCO BALL DANCE FLOOR

We have some questions that we ask all of our couples when we first start the planning process. One of them is “when you look back on your wedding day, what do you most want to remember?” Katie and Graydon chose the option “how fun and exciting everything was!” Well, that’s our cue to start planning the most amazing party!

With the band The 99s booked, we needed a stage and dance floor worthy of their amazing tunes. To amp up the party vibe, we hung disco balls from the ceiling at varying heights and sizes, which brought energy and movement to the space. We installed a dance floor in a classic black-and-white checker pattern with a subtle marble finish, which we absolutely loved. It brought a classic, polished mid-century vibe and anchored the space fabulously. To connect the ceiling to the dance floor, we decorated the stage with giant silver spheres, tying everything together and creating a dynamic focal point that amplified the party atmosphere!

A lounge for a couple who loves old fashioneds

We designed a floor plan that would keep everyone at the heart of the celebration, so we placed velvet olive lounge sofas with end tables around the dance floor, inviting guests to enjoy cocktails and conversation.

a vintage black & white piped Cake

Of course, no detail was overlooked when it came to the cake. Loving the latest trend of vintage piped cakes, we did a single-tier heart-shaped cake in crisp white, finished with a delicate “Just Married” in black — the perfect sweet ending to an incredible day.
