Ten Amazing Wedding Cakes

Of all the wedding customs and traditions, the wedding cake is definitely one of the most fun, and delicious! When you think about it, this edible work of art at the centrepiece of the reception is kind of a strange custom! Did you know that in the Middle Ages, it was common for wedding guests to bring small cakes to the wedding, and then stack them on top of each other to create a tower? The couple would then attempt to kiss over the tower without knocking it down, a tradition that evolved into the modern cake-cutting ceremony. While that tradition sadly hasn’t made a comeback, in our years of wedding planning, we have seen (and tasted!) the most incredible cakes that we still fantasize about today. Here are ten of the most amazing!

01. The Mermaid cake

This masterpiece by Nadia and Co. is the mermaid/cake version of the famous painting The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli, and we think it does it justice! With incredible shading in the water and sky, birds flying in the icing, and fondant flowers so detailed they even include stamen, this cake is nothing short of spectacular.

02. Adrienne and Matthew’s Cake

This nature-inspired cake is nothing short of a work of art. Made by Edna Cuvin, a family friend of the bride, who is, shockingly, an “amateur” cake baker! The florals in the cake were inspired by the wedding’s centrepieces and bouquets. The detail in the leaves and the shading in the flowers is perfection, and the bird perched on the branch is the most adorable cake topper.

03. THE Mad Bash CAKE

We needed a cake for our Mad Bash Group branded photoshoot so we had this beauty created by The Olivia Yang Cake Studio. With beautiful 3D floral and seed details, teal petals, and incredible piping, this cake is a show stopper.

We love the recent trend of vintage piped cakes, but we also fell in love with palette knife botanicals and flowers. We asked Olivia Y to mix the two trends to create the towering, sweet masterpiece.

04. THE VAN GOGH Cake

This work of art was inspired by Van Gogh’s famous ‘Irises’ painting, and was created for an editorial photoshoot. We were inspired by Dutch artists and paintings for this shoot. Nadia took the concept and ran with it, painting her very own irises right onto the fondant. By Nadia and Co.

05. ANJALI AND JON’S WEDDING CAKE

This gorgeous floral buttercream cake was created by Love in Bloom. Look at those beautiful yellow pansies! All of the flowers pressed into the fondant are edible florals that had been pre-pressed and then adorned the cake. We love the pressed flower cake trend and hope to see it continue!

06. Isabel and Gary’s WEDDING CAKE

This incredible blue and gold ruffle floral cake was made by Nadia and Co. for Isabel and Gary’s wedding. Isabel’s wedding inspiration was Art Basel and she asked us to create as many art worthy moments as possible. For that request, we knew Nadia was the right person to call!

07. VINTAGE PIPED Cakes by Kwento

We had these five magical cakes made by Kwento for a Bon Voyage party. The cherries were coated in glitter! These cakes show off the piped cake trend that seems to be growing in popularity. Each cake had its own unique flavour like Salted Caramel, Strawberries and Creme and Carrot. These were thoroughly enjoyed and added a ton of whimsy to the charcuterie spread.

08. THE Palm Springs CAKE

This beautiful little cake was created by Nadia and Co. The pink and purple beads were made of fondant to match the beads hanging on the ceremony’s arch. The whole vibe of this shoot was inspired by 70s beaded curtains. Funny story- we transported this cake from Toronto to Palm Springs and had to put it through the security belt. A few strands fell off as a result and we had to glue it back together for this shoot!

09. THE Moody Victorian CAKE

This sexy little black cake was created by Le Dolci for a Victorian-inspired editorial photoshoot we designed. Cakes don’t need to be massive to create a stunning result. If you are opting for a small cake, make sure that you can enjoy the flavour together and that it embodies your personality!

10. Emma and Ben’s Wedding Cake

This chic wedding cake was created by The Olivia Yang Cake Studio for Emma and Ben’s wedding. The cake is inspired by an abstract pastel painting and the roses are made of fondant! The thing about wedding cakes is that they can be fully customized to your taste and should feel really celebratory.

BONUS: Emily and Myles’ “cheese cake”

Feast your eyes on this shockingly massive cake made of cheese wheels, dressed with figs, strawberries, and an adorable skiing wedding cake topper. You don’t need to take your wedding cake totally seriously, and if cake isn’t your thing, break tradition and dream up something new!

DOUBLE BONUS: AMANDA AND NiCK’s CAKE TOPPER

Don’t forget the cake topper! Another one of weddings’ more delightful traditions, the cake topper turns your ‘any old tiered cake’ into ‘definitely a wedding cake.’ We at Mad Bash always like to remember to have fun with our weddings, and this cake topper that Amanda and Nick chose definitely subscribed to that belief. It was a conversation starter that had people commenting all night. High five!
